MARTIAL ARTS FOR THE HANDICAPABLE INC. of GREATER NEW YORK

The MAH., Inc. is a non-profit, educational organization devoted to providing handicapable individuals with a unique set of tools for building a new life — a life founded on dignity and the ability to choose one’s own destiny. The goal of the MAH.,  is to help people with disabilities improve and strengthen themselves physically and mentally through the application of concepts found within the martial arts. In addition to practical skills of self defense, martial arts training instills self discipline and confidence, and conveys a wealth of lessons that can be utilized in many areas of life. Our organization advocates a positive framework for training and life, in which the only limitations are set by a student’s determination to learn. All students are accepted — regardless of the nature or the degree of disability. The MAH.,  is a community resource providing avenues of growth for handicapable students and a source of education for the public at large.

Martial Arts for the Handicapable

Grand Master Ted Vollrath, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is the first person in the world to have earned a black belt in karate while training from a wheelchair.
As a US Marine serving in the Korean War, Mr. Vollrath received wounds in combat which eventually necessitated amputation of both his legs. Undeterred, Mr. Vollrath began martial arts training in 1967. In addition to his master-instructor grade in Isshinryu karate, Mr. Vollrath has been awarded black belt rank in the Gojoryu and Shotokan styles of karate, tae kwon do, and Pai Lum kung fu.
Mr. Vollrath founded the MAH., Inc. in 1971. In all, he has dedicated more than 30 years of his life to assisting others, teaching how to look past limitations, providing encouragement, and being a mentor and friend.

The Instructor Certification Program

In addition to our direct involvement with handicapable students, we train instructors of all legitimate styles of martial arts to work with students in their own locations, and in their own field of expertise. The instructional methodology we teach can be adapted to any martial art, and does not require established instructors to revise their proven curriculums and concepts.

Upon completion of training, the MAH. will issue teaching certification and affiliation credentials to instructors desirous of assisting handicapable students within our organizational network.lin_red.gif 1.1 K
